Critical Design Review CDR
Table Of Content
The list of reviews done by an effort and the content, nature, process, and objectives any review uses vary enormously by the organization involved and the particular situation of the effort. During the design review process, stakeholders assess the design in question. In a design review meeting, designers present the design, and participants provide feedback in the form of questions, challenges, and suggested improvements.
Before the Design Critique Session
Where a CDR is focused on determining if a system can meet its stated performance requirements within cost, schedule, and risk. A Preliminary Design Review (PDR) is conducted to ensure new technologies are mature enough to be integrated into a product subsystem to form its allocated baseline. Collecting feedback is an integral part of a product designer’s work – one which allows them to make sure that the product they’re designing is both intuitive and adds value to users’ lives. However, it’s not just about asking fellow designers, stakeholders, and developers for their opinions, per se.
Missions
The questions below are useful across industries and stages of the development lifecycle. Ask them in a design review to help identify and improve problem areas. Before a design critique session begins, the facilitator should set out clearly what the scope and expectations of the critique are. These days, design critiques don’t need to be held in person, or even at a set time. With real-time collaboration tools like UXPin, design critiques can be delivered asynchronously through iterative feedback.
Walk Participants Through Use Case Scenarios
With good critiques, designers can easily collect relevant and actionable feedback on product prototypes. By incorporating designer and stakeholder feedback into the UX design process, you can reinforce your business goals and design products that better meet user needs. A design critique is performed in order to evaluate a design and provide feedback on whether or not it meets business objectives and user needs. Design critiques encourage collaboration within teams and provide a boost to positive team culture toward improving design ideas. The feedback received during design critiques helps designers think outside of the box, often leading to better, more innovative choices throughout the design process. A Critical Design Review (CDR) is a multi-disciplined independent technical assessment to ensure that a system can proceed into fabrication, demonstration, and test and meet stated performance requirements within cost, schedule, and risk.
What is a design critique?
The SAR examines the system, its end products and documentation, and test data and analyses that support verification. It also ensures that the system has sufficient technical maturity to authorize its shipment to the designated operational facility or launch site. A TRR ensures that the test article (hardware/software), test facility, support personnel, and test procedures are ready for testing and data acquisition, reduction, and control. A PRR is held for Flight System and Ground Support projects developing or acquiring multiple or similar systems greater than three or as determined by the project. The PRR determines the readiness of the system developers to efficiently produce the required number of systems. It ensures that the production plans; fabrication, assembly, and integration enabling products; and personnel are in place and ready to begin production.

They are responsible for keeping the discussion on topic, on track, and on time. It is the facilitator’s job to remind everyone of the central question to be answered during the critique, and if the conversation begins to stray from the focus of the discussion, intervene to sideboard tangential topics. This is the primary designer who created and will be presenting the design work on behalf of the design team. This person is responsible not only for showing the latest stage in the design process but also for providing all necessary context and content for the critique. For example, they would likely be responsible for providing the research and impetus for the design decisions made at this stage. Critical design reviews for the individual SLS elements of the core stage, boosters and engines were completed successfully as part of this milestone.

Design critiques help break down silos, where individual designers or teams are disconnected in their approach from other colleagues and the wider business objectives. “Particularly this will show up in the areas of model-based systems engineering, and modular open systems architectures. Additionally, a successful ground run of one of the prototype aircraft for FARA will reduce risks on future Improved Turbine Engine integration efforts on the other platforms,” he said. Some product and design teams have a set of principles they like to stick to help guide the discussion and prevent negative energy throughout the session. After the session and depending on the objectives of the meeting, the presenter should have a list of specific actions to be taken next. They should then create a summary of the feedback and actions and share it with the group.

This is different from a project review, which covers not only technicalities, but also budget, resources, availability, and scheduling. Many designers struggle to break out of silos and worry about sharing their unfinished work with others. The presenter should make sure that all the feedback is in line with the context described previously, and follows the rules set in the beginning.
A design critique panel is made up of a handful of designers, developers, analysts, or other key stakeholders. A critique group should include 5-7 other team members (designers, developers, copywriters, product managers, etc.) and relevant business stakeholders. The primary responsibility of the critiquers is to provide feedback on the design while following the rules and to help improve the presented solution. As mentioned earlier, a formal design review should include cross-functional team members that are not intimately involved in the design.
This material considers a software project to be a system of systems as well as a single subsystem within the larger project. "System of systems" refers to a software project that includes software subsystems that perform functions allocated to them. Just as a project allocates requirements to hardware, software, external components, etc., software projects allocate software requirements to software subsystems. We discuss transforming medical device development through the utilisation of interdisciplinary, and cross industry teams.... Design reviews may also be technical (the team discusses technical details specifically).
As the world becomes increasingly connected and user needs constantly evolving, the design of safety critical IFU’s must keep up with this. The MDR examines the proposed requirements, the mission architecture, and the flow down to all functional elements of the mission to ensure that the overall concept is complete, feasible, and consistent with available resources. The MCR affirms the mission need and examines the proposed mission's objectives and the concept for meeting those objectives. The Smartsheet platform makes it easy to plan, capture, manage, and report on work from anywhere, helping your team be more effective and get more done.
This design review meeting minutes template makes it simple to collect all of the meeting information, including participants, presenters, agenda, and discussion points. Use this downloadable template to present the current state of the project and design. The design review package contains product development specifications, relevant engineering data, competitive analysis of existing products, drawings, prototypes, and mockups, a project risk analysis, and a list of design risks. Included on this page, you’ll find a free design review action item checklist template, a design review package template for designers, and agendas for formal and technical design review meetings. To support the collaborative approach that design critiques and agile feedback promote, it’s worth using a collaborative design tool.
